Wild Card
I wholeheartedly agree with those of you out there thinking that getting rid of the wild card feature was one of AI's biggest mistakes.
I do like the way the judges massacre the heck out of the Hollywood bound by putting them on the chopping block so quickly (and often) once they arrive in Hollywood. It's a good way to come up with this semi-final group. But then once we vote this group down, I think the judges should bring a wild-card choice in to stir things up. Perhaps it could be anyone from the Hollywood group and later. AND they could actually replace someone who shouldn't have made it that far with their wild card choice. I think they should be able to dismiss someone and replace them with their wild card choice. Yes! That's it. That would do it for me. What a moment that would be. Everyone is back on the chopping block in that one moment.
O.k. doing it that way would make up for stupid voting - people voted off too early (Patrick) or people getting through who have overstayed their welcome - think back to goat girl, red-haired crooner & marine boy. It could also give the judges a chance for a "do over" if they were on the bubble about someone who maybe should have gotten a shot in the first place.
The argument of course with the wild card performer is that this person is dropped back into the competition all fresh and ready to go without having suffered through all the stress and strain that the others have just endured for weeks. Whatever. There's nothing equal and fair about the whole thing if I'm keeping it real for you folks. People can vote for anyone for any reason in any quantity they desire on any given week. There's no guarantee that anyone is getting through based on their actual talent anyway so why worry about it? Give us a wild card pick. Come on FOX .... do it... I triple dog dare you.

Anyway.... I'm sure you've guessed that this all to say that I don't think Patrick should have been voted off yet. There were clearly worse performances. But you know, what did I say about him after the performance show? That he was forgettable. That I didn't even remember his performance either by the time we were dialing 1-866-vote a friend - and I loved this guy's voice. What did I remember on the other hand? His super freaky friends in the audience! That's what we were talking about instead of his voice...
Lesson learned I hope. Never take friends to the show that may upstage you. I'd have mistakenly voted for them if they had a number flashed under their faces... that's how much more memorable they were.

I agree about the wild card. And it is true that wild card contestants would be coming in fresh, but any advantage that gave would be off-set by the fact that they wouldn't be used to peforming before such a large audience as the others would be. So both wild card and regular contestants would each have their own advantages.
wild card was my absolute favorite episode and i am upset it is gone, too. But even the judges can't get it right all the time - recall that "goat girl" was a wildcard pick (simon's, no less! i expect that from paula, but simon?)
But i do agree...Survivor always has new twists every season - why can't idol? i love the pick-and-replace idea...
totally agree about the wild card. It makes it interesting. Problem is that the show is so popular that it doesn't matter what they do right now, people are going to watch it.
Well the final 12 should be:
Ladies - Lisa, Paris, Katharine, Mandisa, Kellie, and Ayla (only Basketball girl should be on the bubble).
BTW, I loved Simon's dig at Carrie with his comment to Kellie.

Yes I said Patrick...Bucky will probably be the 12th but I do not see him making more than 2 weeks more.
Overall America did a good job of getting rid of the weaker performers...hummm, maybe I should hold that comment until after tonight.
Oh one more plug for the Wild Card. Remember Nikko got voted off before the top 12 but got to come back because of the Mario Meltdown. Patrick is this year's Nikko, he does not deserve to win AI but he should have made the top 12 for sure.

I am so sad that you are not blogging this season. I understand that things change and people move on - but you are just to damn funny and insightful - you are missed.

so where are the rant sisters? anyway, i agree with keith on his pick of the top 12. especially the guys which should have had gedeon and patrick instead of chicken little and bucky. wouldn't it have been great to hear gedeon sing on stevie wonder night? we need a black guy in the top 12! i've been ok with who has been eliminated so far, especially chicken little. the judges are really going to complain this week when it is country night. i hope someone will sing really great so the judges will get excited again, especially simon.

OOOOOHHHHH we miss you so!!! This season just isn't near the fun without you. So much great talant on the show but it just isn't the same without you. I can't even get excited enough to vote. Hope you'll be back again next year - - or maybe later this season. If not, thanks for all you've done in the past. I know your blog takes much time and effort, which for sleep deprived Mamas is in short supply. Just know that your efforts create much joy and laughter in many lives.
