I'm sadly jaded.
Bitter and jaded.
No more Jenny from the Block to soothe my nerves on these freakishly poor choice theme shows.
Alright, I'm fine. No, I'm not.
Let me hear an Amen if ya feel me now.
Thanks.
So....
Big Band. Big Band. It had it's moment. And now it's gone. Don't get me wrong. It wasn't a night of horrible singing.... well except for Jasmine's second song. Goodness. Yes, I said 2nd song. All 5 contestants sang 2 songs. 2 songs with ridiculous Vegas show banter and tacky shout outs in between. They let them talk ya'll. Talk to the people in between the songs. Just sing already, cause none of you were good at speaking last night.
Hhhmm..... what else? Oh yes....
Paula had on some creepy white sequined halter gown with a HUGE white flower on the side of her head and so much makeup I thought she was gonna melt right there under the lights. Yikes. And then she started to cry after Fantasia's moving performance (no, I wasn't moved, but she was) and black mascara was creeping down her face...... SCARY times.
The show was no musical moment of enlightenment for me. Sorry, but it just wasn't. They all sang well. There were no bad performances (I already removed Jasmine from the group on this one) and it was all just O.k. Latoya blew it out of the water with what Simon called "A 10 out of 10 on a great broadway performance" . And he prefaced that with "I mean this as a compliment". Oh. Ala Clay Aiken's Mack the Knife performance Latoya burned that Big Band jazz style up. She was my one TiVo rewind moment. It really was perfect for her. Fantasia was good. George was good, but Randy and Simon said it was boring and safe, Diana was good (hated her useless Mickey mouse club chatter on stage), and Jasmine was the weakest link in my opinion. Her first song was fine, but then she tried to sing a song that my girl Dreah sang for her initial audition (remember?) and was all over the place out of tune in spots. Dreah had the look and talent to sell that song. Flower girl, you do not.
This show was a stylist disaster. Just incredible. Incredibly bad. I have said it before, but it bears repeating I guess. Please do not put pastelly satin (K-Lo style) on girls with a little roll in the middle. Diana's purple satin slip dress disaster may have looked pretty on the hanger.... but leave it there next time. The hanger is where it belongs. Now Fantasia and Latoya were dressed alright (although I'm frightened by the number of chain accessories I keep seeing, and they managed to put one on over an otherwise very pretty orange dress Latoya wore) but the hair was hideous. I know they were going for the Big Band period fingerwave style thing. It didn't work. And let's talk about the chain thing. WHY? Why must there be a chain on everyone's hips every single week? Not just one chain. Not just a classic drop chain belt circa Chanel mid 90's. But Jasmine had some sort of run in with a chain link fence before coming on stage. There was chain hanging everywhere. And I've already mentioned Latoya's "accessory" - notice I use quotes because I'm not convinced it was one.
Alright. Enough whining from me on this one. For me it's not even worth talking about the singing and each person's performance. I'm moving on. Waiting for something better next week.
I'm out.
